Reports Of My Demise...

[click photo]

On my recent voyage to Tralfamadore my traveling companion Kilgore Trout got drunk and grabbed the controls sending us careening through the Chronosynclastic Infundibulum.

Since then, every time I've logged onto the internet and seen the conditions of things these days, I zip off back in time to when this country stood for something good and useful.

This has made it difficult to relate to, more or less to comment on, the despicable state of affairs which is this country today. As soon as I formed a thought, but before I could get it down on paper - or electrons as it is - whoosh, I was back somewhere conversing with the likes of Washington, Jefferson, Sam Clemens and even Tesla.

Having returned to the Chronosynclastic Infundibulum and passing backwards through it I seem to be stuck back in time only to return to find the OUTRAGEOUS TEXT ENHANCED LINK BULLSHIT all over The Lair and my other blogs.

I HATE THAT SHIT! FUCKING POP-UP BOXES ANYTIME YOU ACCIDENTALLY MOUSE OVER THEM!

I AM NOT SPONSORING FREE COMPUTERS! I AM NOT PLUGGING GOVERNMENT GRANTS! WHO GIVES A SHIT IF SOME SACRAMENTO MOM MAKES $77 PER HOUR!

THEY ARE ALL SCAMS! NOTHING IS FREE - STRINGS ARE ATTACHED!

I DO NOT WANT THIS SHIT ON MY BLOG! WHO AUTHORIZED THEM TO DO THIS?

GOOGLE SUCKS!

I CAN'T TAKE IT!

KILGORE, WHERE ARE YOU - WE NEED ANOTHER RETURN TRIP - I'LL BRING THE BOOZE!

MONTANA, I'M ON MY WAY!

NINES - HELP!

ADDENDUM:

After realizing these "Text Enhancement" links were only occurring on my desktop computer and not on my other computers nor on other peoples computers I ran a full scan with MalwareBytes and after 1 hour and fourteen minutes of scanning it found nothing. I was going to go online and see if I could find anything out about it so I hovered over one of the links to make sure I had the title right. I then noticed a little question mark Icon so I clicked on it. It gave me the choice of opting out of the service. So after scrolling through about 15,243 Captcha phrases until I found one I could read enough to get it right, I am finally opted out and the links have gone away.

What I want to know is why was I apparently opted in automatically and forced to go through the crap of opting out?

  1. Now I'm wondering if the Text Enhanced links are something on my desktop computer. Here on my laptop they are not showing up. Unfortunately Rin has gone to bed and the desktop is turned off.

Let me know if you see those links and I'll check more on them tomorrow.

The links were showing up at words such as "free" - you've won a free computer, "government" - you may qualify for a government grant, "Google" - Sacramento woman earns $77 per hour working from home.

  2. I'm busy yelling "PEANUT BUTTER!" at the frogs. Take two aspirin and call me in the morning.

[It must be a browser thing because I'm not seeing it. Or you are hallucinating. Or, if you have switched to the new platform, just switch back. Or, if you haven't done that, it must be in settings somewhere. I will look and see if I can help, but I'm on the old platform and NOT budging from it... and it comes over here with me, no matter what setting you have on your account....]

  3. It's probably from overuse of the time/spacewarp. You are seeing things. But, seriously, dude, if you switched to the new interface, just undo that until you have the chi for it.

Firefox will NOT let me comment on here anymore. I have to suffer with all the cookie removal crap involved in using Safari. The world's gone mad. This is a PLOT to drive us into the sea.

  4. I'm not seeing it here at work either so I am suspecting some form of malware on my home desktop. Or I caught Google testing it out before they shut it down again.

    Time to run Malwarebytes!

    I'll let ya know tonight.

  5. OK - That's it - it is something in this desktop not in my blogs - it shows up here but nowhere else.

Launching MalwareBytes deep scan now! First I need to update the definition data base.

  8. It's some advertising scheme that crawels through the web. Just this morning I found another such scheme called Kontera active on my work computer. It is a different product but acts in the same manner:

Kontera’s in-text advertising product collects non-personally identifiable information from websites in which our in-text advertising product is enabled. We use that information to deliver targeted advertising on many other websites you may visit. If you prefer that Kontera does not collect non-personally identifiable information about your website visits for the purpose of delivering targeted advertising, you may opt out by clicking here. Please note that if you delete your cookies, or use a different computer or browser, you may need to renew your opt-out choice.

Don't you love the way it creeps back in if you clear out your cookies!

  9. It highlights and double underlines various words and when you mouse over it displays a small pop-up window with some form of advertisement.

This morning the words "fuel tank" brought up an ad for Edmonds car buyers guide as did the the word "Saturn". The word "manager" brought ut a dating site.

This kind of crap seems to have started up a while back when Microcrap launched "Bing". It took a bunch of research to find out how to disable that annoying piece of crap.

  10. In the "Privacy" settings of Firefox there is a box to click to tell websites not to track you. I've activated it, but it is voluntary and they can ignore it if they wish.

  11. There was recently some meeting of the minds at Davos, which included the big boys of the tubes, and now all browsers seem to giving one the illusion of more control, but at the same time letting much more crap in the way of tracking take hold. If you think about it, it would HAVE to shake out this way. If they don't get a lock on that, we can prevent them from making money off us. Can't have that. Can't have THAT.

My experience of it is different from yours because I'm on a Mac and Macs still involve far fewer headaches than PCs, but it's going global on us and we CAN'T stop them unless we get some bodhisattva programers to give us a viable way out.

IF WE DON'T CHANGE THE DOMINANT PARADIGM THIS WILL ONLY BECOME WORSE AND WORSE AND WORSE.

Luckily, we will be dead before we experience it in full flower, but, well, you know what I think of people who only give a shit about their own generation, AND about people who default down to consoling themselves this way....

  12. Example: Everybody was baling from Google Analytics. So they just put it on the Blogger interface so we couldn't stay off their radar. Does no good to travel over to another platform because they are doing the same thing.

If you get your own domain and rent your own server space, you are vulnerable to every manner of hacking and you are QUICKLY discouraged from that shit. The servers people who can protect you from that are either evil fucks it isn't nice to fatten further or industrious outsiders who charge big money for that safety.

    CAPITALISM IS SATAN.

  13. OMG...

Last night I had nightmares about these "services". Every time I went to a new web page they would pop up. I would opt out only to have a new one pop up at the next pag I went to. One after another they kept popping up faster than I could opt out of them!

I must give credit to Raw Story, after checking the don't track me option in Firefox, the ads based on my recent internet searches for various products have stopped appearing all over the Raw Story main page.
